The Power of the Pack: 8 Reasons Group Runs Make You Better
Last year I ventured out of my solo comfort bubble and asked a few local friends if they’d consider running with me. They obliged, a group text emerged, and we were soon making plans for our inaugural run together.
It was the beginning of a beautiful run group that brought along with it so much that I truly did not expect. This group would become a lifeline and the game genie code to a more confident and motivated me, plus a whole lot more. Following are 8 reasons running in a group can make you better.
Accountability.
Running with a group builds accountability by way of shared goals met by collaborative support. Consider waking up at 5 am to run alone versus getting up at 5 am to meet three other people to run. Which one are you more likely to show up to? You’ll be more motivated to stick with a plan knowing that there’s someone depending on you on the other side. Camaraderie is one of the most reliable ways to turn intention into action.
Find your people.
The bond of runners is something uniquely special. When we lean into the running community, we really do find our people. These relationships are built on growth, support and positivity, so it’s no surprise they often become rich, reciprocal, and genuinely intimate. Running can be a powerful catalyst for some of the deepest, most meaningful friendships we’ll ever have.
Alleviate the Pressure.
Friends can pull away the pressure of performance. I know personally when I go out for a run and it’s me versus me I tend to become my own worst enemy, obsess about my pace, and stress myself the heck out. But when I run with a group, the collaboration somehow lightens the load; whatever pace we land on feels perfectly appropriate, and the miles fly by.
Dare to Dream BIGGER.
Friends can also allow you the opportunity to believe in bigger dreams. Group running offers a chance to run further and faster than you would on your own or sign up for a race you may not have if left to your own devices. It’s easier to challenge yourself when you’re part of a group. Think of it as borrowing someone else’s confidence until it becomes your own. Doing this repeatedly can result in a feeling of empowerment that fosters your own self-confidence.
Safety in Numbers.
It’s no secret that running alone isn’t always the safest choice. If safety is ever a concern, a group can ease fears, provide increased visibility, and protect against potential human threats that you may face while flying solo.
Have Fun.
Fitness is fun. Research has long established links between regular physical activity and happiness. Research has also long-established links between social connection and happiness. Put them together and you have a fun explosion! But really, it is fun to run alongside like-minded individuals. There is joy in opting into a difficult pursuit together. And there’s a certain magic that comes with it that feels really freeing. We can share ourselves more wholly and connect with our running friends while endorphins are flowing. Pro tip: laughter amidst movement is cathartic and smiles are contagious.
GAINZ!
There is a concept in behavioral psychology called social facilitation. Social facilitation explains that the presence of others sharpens focus and increases effort. In this case, when you are aware of someone running beside you, your brain’s response is to step up its game. Research has shown that runners tend to be more focused, run further and work harder when they’re surrounded by others who are pushing to achieve a common goal. This ultimately results in GAINZ!
Secret Code of Runners (TMI)
Too much information? Never enough for a run group! Poop, farts, chafing, you name it, it’s not too much for us. Bring on the TMI at every turn. You get this time to let loose, spill some tea, and let your freak flag fly.
AND SO…
Group running can make you not only a better runner, but a better human with deeper connections and a stronger sense of self. Don’t forget that group running should be inclusive, so seek out people who welcome you in, not push you away. A good running group supports progress for every kind of runner, from beginners to seasoned athletes. Whether you’re looking to run faster times or simply show up more consistently, group running has a lot to offer. So, grab your shoes, rally your crew, and run some loops; you won’t regret it.
